Microsoft Windows Movie Maker - The Free Video Editing Software

Microsoft Windows Movie Maker is one of the simple and free video editing software from Microsoft. It is included in Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Vista, but not in Microsoft Windows 7. Windows Movie Maker was first introduced in 2000 in Windows ME and the latest versions available are Windows Movie Maker 2.1 for Windows XP SP2, Windows Movie Maker 2.5 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and Windows Movie Maker 2.6 for Windows Vista. You can download and use Windows Movie Maker in Windows 7, even though it is not pre-installed.

Features of Windows Movie Maker:

The main features in Windows Movie Maker are effects, transitions, titles/credits, audio track, time line narration and auto movie. A video transition decides how the movie plays from one clip to the next one, video effect determines how a video clip, picture or title is displayed in the movie, titles/credits are for adding text based information to the the movie and the auto movie feature helps to create movie quickly with pre defined effects and transitions.

Unlike other video editing software Windows Movie Maker is simple to use. We can import video clip, audio clip or a picture from our computer or any external sources with a single click. The editing is also simple, we have to drag and drop each clip to the time line according to the order it has to be displayed, we can also change the order in later (before saving). The video effects available for each clip can be selected by right clicking the clip after placing it in the time line storyboard. For adding video transition just drag the selected transition effect and drop it in the space between two clips. After editing we can save the movie in our computer in .wma format or DV AVI. Other options like send to email and publish in web are also available to share small clips through internet in Windows Movie Maker. You can also burn your video in a disc for sharing.

Another advantage of Windows Movie Maker is that all the effects are XML based, so if you know XML you can create custom effects and transitions for your video.

Windows Live Movie Maker

Windows Livw Movie Maker is a part of Windows Live and it is for replacing the Windows Movie Maker in Windows Vista. Currently Windows Movie Maker is not pre installed in WIndows 7 and users can use it online as Windows Live Movie Maker. It allows users to make HD videos and publish videos to YouTube. Windows Live Movie Maker is not compatible with the Windows versions prior to Windows Vista.
